SESK: Stuff Everyone Should Know · sesk.info/eng-joule-newton-meter
One joule of work is the same as what?
One newton acting through one meter (1 J = 1 N·m).
- One watt for one hour
- One newton moved through one meter ✔
- One newton per square meter
Why: Work is force times distance. Push with 1 newton over 1 meter and you have done 1 joule of work, the SI unit for both work and energy.
Huh, didn't know that: A force perpendicular to an object's motion does no work on it.
I tried to lift a joule of energy, but it was just a little bit of work.
