SESK: Stuff Everyone Should Know · sesk.info/eng-road-superelevation
Why is the outside edge of a road curve often raised?
Superelevation helps counter the vehicle's lateral acceleration through the curve.
- To help counter lateral acceleration ✔
- To slow vehicles before the curve
- To eliminate tire forces
Why: Banking tilts part of the road's normal force inward, helping tires provide the needed turning force. The chosen slope balances speed, radius, friction, climate, and slow traffic.
Huh, didn't know that: Too little or too much superelevation can both reduce comfort or safety under some operating conditions.
The road banked on a smoother turn.
