SESK: Stuff Everyone Should Know · sesk.info/eng-setpoint-process-variable-error
In feedback control, what is the setpoint?
The setpoint is the desired value of the process variable.
- The sensor's noise
- The actuator's maximum output
- The desired process value ✔
Why: The process variable is what the sensor measures, while the setpoint is the target. Their difference is the control error used to calculate corrective action.
Huh, didn't know that: Steady-state error is the final difference between process variable and setpoint after transients settle.
The setpoint had goals, and the process variable had progress reports.
