Why does a saltwater tank hold fewer fish than a freshwater tank of the same size?
Saltwater holds less oxygen, and marine fish mind crowding.
- Saltwater fish are always bigger
- Saltwater holds less dissolved oxygen ✔
- Salt makes fish lazy
Why: Merck's saltwater guideline is about 1 inch of fish per 5 gallons, far fewer than freshwater. Saltwater carries less dissolved oxygen, and saltwater fish are more sensitive to crowding.
Huh, didn't know that: Saltwater aquariums are usually mixed to about 30 to 33 parts salt per thousand.
Why did the saltwater fish need extra space? It didn't want to be in a pickle.
