Why is a 19-inch-long vertical antenna often used on 2 meters?

It is a resonant quarter-wave on that band.

  1. It is a resonant half-wave
  2. It has high gain
  3. It is a resonant quarter-wave ✔

Why: A full wavelength on 2 meters is a bit under 7 feet. A quarter of that, trimmed slightly as real antennas need, is about 19 inches.

Huh, didn't know that: A 5/8-wave whip has more gain than a quarter-wave for VHF and UHF mobile use.

The dad joke
Why did the 19-inch antenna feel so complete? It was a quarter of the way to greatness.
