SESK: Stuff Everyone Should Know · sesk.info/ham-battery-short-hazard
What hazard can come from shorting an unprotected 12-volt battery?
A short can cause burns, fire, or an explosion.
- Burns, fire, or an explosion ✔
- Shock from touching both terminals
- Poison gas from nearby RF
Why: A storage battery can deliver extremely high current through a short circuit. The rapid heating can burn, ignite material, or make the battery fail violently.
Huh, didn't know that: Low voltage does not mean low short-circuit current.
The battery studied safety because it wanted a positive future.
