SESK: Stuff Everyone Should Know · sesk.info/ham-first-transmit-uls
After passing your first ham exam, when may you start transmitting?
When your license grant appears in the FCC database (ULS).
- Right after you get your exam completion certificate
- When your grant appears in the FCC license database ✔
- When your license arrives in the mail
Why: A new ham must wait until the license shows up in the FCC Universal Licensing System. The exam certificate alone is not enough for a first license.
Huh, didn't know that: The FCC now sends new licensees an email with a link to download the license.
Why did the new ham keep refreshing the FCC website? He was waiting for a sign.
