Why are metals generally good conductors of electricity?

They have many free electrons that can move easily.

  1. They have many free electrons ✔
  2. They have many free protons
  3. They have relatively high density

Why: In metals, outer electrons are not tied to one atom. These free electrons can drift through the metal, which lets current flow easily.

Huh, didn't know that: Silver conducts slightly better than copper, but copper is much cheaper, so it is used for wire.

The dad joke
Why are copper wires so easy to get along with? They have no resistance to new ideas.
