SESK: Stuff Everyone Should Know · sesk.info/ham-ssb-narrower-than-fm
What is one characteristic of single sideband (SSB) compared to FM?
SSB signals have narrower bandwidth.
- SSB has narrower bandwidth ✔
- SSB is easier to tune in correctly
- SSB always uses wider bandwidth
Why: SSB sends just one sideband and no carrier, so it takes up much less spectrum than FM. That leaves room for more signals on the band.
Huh, didn't know that: If you tune an SSB voice slightly off frequency, it sounds high or low pitched like a cartoon character.
SSB is the skinny jeans of radio modes. It fits in tight spaces.
