How is a voltmeter connected to a component to measure applied voltage?

In parallel with the component.

  1. In series
  2. In parallel ✔
  3. In quadrature

Why: A voltmeter measures the difference in voltage between two points, so its probes go across the component, in parallel.

Huh, didn't know that: To measure current, a meter goes in series instead, so the current flows through it.

The dad joke
Why did the voltmeter stand next to the resistor? It wanted to see things from its point of view.
