SESK: Stuff Everyone Should Know · sesk.info/hamg-qrl-check
How can you check that a clear-sounding frequency is not in use before calling CQ?
Ask if it is in use: "QRL?" on CW, or say it on phone, then your call sign.
- Listen for exactly 2 minutes
- Send "QSY" on CW or announce the frequency is in use
- Ask if it is in use, then give your call sign ✔
Why: A weak station on the frequency may be inaudible to you. Sending QRL? on CW, or asking if the frequency is in use on phone, gives that station a chance to answer.
Huh, didn't know that: In Q-code, QRL? means "Are you busy?" or "Is this frequency in use?"
You know you're a ham when you start talking to yourself in code.
