SESK: Stuff Everyone Should Know · sesk.info/home-c-sump-test
When you test a sump pump by pouring in water, NDSU Extension says it should turn on and off at least how many times?
At least twice.
- Once
- Twice ✔
- Five times
Why: Pour water into the sump until the float starts the pump, and watch the float and listen. The pump should switch on and off at least twice. Gravel-like sounds or a sluggish float mean it may need replacing.
Huh, didn't know that: If the pit is dry, you can lift the float for about 10 seconds to see whether the pump runs smoothly. A backup pump can be checked the same way.
Knock, knock. Who's there? Water. Water who? Water you doing today?
