SESK: Stuff Everyone Should Know · sesk.info/home-thermostat-geofence
What does geofencing do on a smart thermostat?
It senses when you leave and sets back the temperature to save energy.
- It locks the thermostat to a PIN
- It blocks the Wi-Fi to the HVAC system
- It detects you've left and sets back the temperature ✔
Why: Geofencing uses your phone's location to know when you're away. The thermostat lowers heating or cooling while you're gone and can restore comfort as you head home.
Huh, didn't know that: Many smart thermostats learn your temperature preferences and set a schedule that saves energy while you sleep or are away.
