SESK: Stuff Everyone Should Know · sesk.info/horse-speak-before-approach
Before you walk up to a horse or touch it, what should you always do first?
Speak to it so it knows you are there.
- Reach out and pat its nose
- Run up quickly
- Speak to the horse ✔
Why: Horses are easily startled, and a surprised horse may jump or kick. Speak in a calm voice and approach from the front or side where it can see you. Then work close to its shoulder.
Huh, didn't know that: Mississippi State says not to "dab" at a horse's nose; pet it with a rubbing touch on the shoulder or neck.
What did the teacher say when the horse walked into class? Why the long face?
