SESK: Stuff Everyone Should Know · sesk.info/hunt-choke
What does the choke on a shotgun barrel do?
It controls how much the shot spreads. It does not make shot go farther.
- Makes the shot travel farther
- Reduces the noise of the shot
- Controls how much the shot spreads ✔
Why: A choke slightly narrows the muzzle to shape the shot pattern. A tighter choke like full keeps the pattern denser at longer range. A more open choke spreads shot quickly for close birds.
Huh, didn't know that: Many shotguns have interchangeable choke tubes so hunters can swap them for different game.
Why did the shotgun choke at the talent show? It could not handle the pressure.
