SESK: Stuff Everyone Should Know · sesk.info/hunt-market-hunting-extinct
Unregulated market hunting in the 1800s helped drive which bird to extinction?
The passenger pigeon (and the Carolina parakeet).
- The bald eagle
- The wild turkey
- The passenger pigeon ✔
Why: With no hunting laws, game was taken in huge numbers to sell. The passenger pigeon and Carolina parakeet went extinct, and deer and bison nearly vanished. Those losses led to modern hunting laws.
Huh, didn't know that: Hunters have since helped restore deer, turkeys, ducks, elk and antelope to record numbers.
Why do we study the passenger pigeon? So history never repeats itself.
