SESK: Stuff Everyone Should Know · sesk.info/megapixels

When buying a camera, does having more megapixels mean the photos will look better?

Not usually. The size of the light sensor matters much more than megapixels.

  1. No, sensor size matters much more ✔
  2. Yes, more pixels means a sharper image
  3. Yes, but only in the dark

Why: Megapixels just tell you how big you can print the photo. A larger sensor captures more light and detail, which creates a truly better image.

Huh, didn't know that: A 12-megapixel professional camera will take vastly better photos than a 100-megapixel cheap phone camera.
