SESK: Stuff Everyone Should Know · sesk.info/osha-spoil-pile-2-feet-back
How far back from the edge of an excavation must spoil piles be kept?
At least 2 feet back from the edge.
- Right at the edge
- At least 2 feet back ✔
- No minimum
Why: 1926.651(j)(2) says dirt and materials must be kept at least 2 feet from the edge, or held back by a retaining device, so they cannot roll into the trench.
Huh, didn't know that: Keeping spoil piles back helps prevent them from collapsing into the trench.
Why did the spoil pile sit 2 feet back? It needed personal space.
