SESK: Stuff Everyone Should Know · sesk.info/pilot-advection-fog-wind
What does advection fog need that radiation fog does not?
Wind, to move moist air over a colder surface.
- Clear skies
- Wind ✔
- Mountains
Why: Advection fog forms when warm, moist air is blown over a colder surface, so it needs wind. It is common along coasts. Above about 15 knots it usually lifts into low stratus clouds.
Huh, didn't know that: Advection and upslope fog may not burn off with the morning sun and can last for days.
What did the beach say when the tide came in? Long time, no sea.
