SESK: Stuff Everyone Should Know · sesk.info/pilot-anti-ice-versus-deice
What is the basic difference between anti-icing and deicing equipment?
Anti-icing prevents ice, while deicing removes ice.
- Both only detect ice
- Prevention versus removal ✔
- Heating versus navigation
Why: Anti-icing systems are intended to stop ice from forming. Deicing systems remove ice that has already accumulated.
Huh, didn't know that: Protected areas may include wings, tail surfaces, pitot openings, propellers, and windshields.
Anti-ice arrived early, but deice handled the leftovers.
