SESK: Stuff Everyone Should Know · sesk.info/pilot-fuel-tank-vent
Why is an airplane fuel tank vented to the outside?
The vent maintains atmospheric pressure inside the tank.
- To maintain tank pressure ✔
- To cool the magnetos
- To measure fuel octane
Why: As fuel leaves the tank, outside air must replace its volume. The vent prevents a pressure imbalance that could interfere with fuel flow.
Huh, didn't know that: Some fuel vents are built into the filler cap, while others use a tube through the wing.
The fuel tank vented because it had too much pressure at work.
