SESK: Stuff Everyone Should Know · sesk.info/pilot-nontowered-pattern-entry
What is the preferred traffic pattern entry from the downwind side at a nontowered airport?
Join midfield at a 45 degree angle to downwind.
- 45 degrees to midfield downwind ✔
- Straight into final
- A descending turn onto base
Why: Approach the downwind leg at a 45 degree angle and join near midfield at pattern altitude. Scan, announce, and fit into traffic already established.
Huh, didn't know that: Inbound pilots are expected to watch for aircraft already in the pattern and conform to the pattern in use.
Why did the airplane enter at 45 degrees? It wanted the right angle on traffic.
