SESK: Stuff Everyone Should Know · sesk.info/pilot-rectangular-course-pattern
Which everyday flight path does the rectangular course maneuver copy?
The airport traffic pattern.
- A holding pattern for instrument flight
- The airport traffic pattern ✔
- A VOR to VOR cross-country leg
Why: You fly around a rectangle of fields or roads at a constant distance, correcting for wind on each leg and in each turn, just as you do on downwind, base and final.
Huh, didn't know that: The FAA says to hold a constant altitude, airspeed and distance from the field edges the whole way around.
I flew a perfect rectangular course. My instructor said it was fair and square.
