SESK: Stuff Everyone Should Know · sesk.info/scout-hazard-trees-campsite

Picking a campsite, what should you look up and check for?

Dead trees and branches that could fall on you.

  1. Clouds shaped like animals
  2. Dead trees or limbs that could fall ✔
  3. How tall the tallest tree is

Why: Dead trees and broken limbs, often called widow-makers, can fall at any time, especially in wind. The Forest Service says avoid camping where trees could fall.

Huh, didn't know that: The Forest Service also says to look up while on trails, especially when it is windy.
