SESK: Stuff Everyone Should Know · sesk.info/scout-hyperventilation-underwater
Why is it dangerous to breathe fast and deep on purpose before holding your breath underwater?
You can pass out before you feel the need to breathe.
- It may delay breathing signals until you pass out ✔
- It raises carbon dioxide until you pass out
- It uses up all oxygen before you enter the water
Why: Deliberate hyperventilation can make you faint from lack of oxygen before your body tells you to breathe. Underwater, that can lead to drowning.
Huh, didn't know that: Because of this risk, competitive underwater swimming events are not allowed in Scouting.
Why did the fish refuse to hold its breath? It didn't see the point.
