SESK: Stuff Everyone Should Know · sesk.info/scout-map-scale-24000
On a 1:24,000 scale topo map, one inch on the map equals about how far on the ground?
2,000 feet.
- 1 mile
- 2,000 feet ✔
- 24,000 miles
Why: A 1:24,000 scale means one unit on the map is 24,000 of the same units on the ground. 24,000 inches is 2,000 feet, about four tenths of a mile.
Huh, didn't know that: USGS's best known maps are the 7.5-minute, 1:24,000-scale quadrangles.
I drew a map at 1:1 scale. It was a big waste of paper.
