SESK: Stuff Everyone Should Know · sesk.info/tech-backup-restore-testing
What does a restore test prove that a backup job report cannot?
It proves the backup can produce usable recovered data.
- The network is anonymous
- Recovery actually works ✔
- RAID has no failed disks
Why: A job can report success while files are incomplete, corrupt, encrypted, or missing required configuration. A restore exercise tests the path from stored copy to working recovery.
Huh, didn't know that: Restore tests can also measure whether recovery meets the required time objective.
The backup aced storage class but still had to pass the restore drill.
