What is the main reason a hard disk drive is so much slower than RAM or an SSD?
Moving parts: spinning platters and a moving read head.
- Its interface limits every random access
- Magnetic data must be decompressed first
- Mechanical movement ✔
Why: An HDD stores data on rotating platters, and a head must swing to the right track and wait for the right spot to spin past. That mechanical delay makes it orders of magnitude slower than RAM. SSDs have no moving parts at all.
Huh, didn't know that: The textbook says SSDs are two to three orders of magnitude faster than hard drives.
Why was the hard drive always late? It kept going around in circles.

The main reason the disk is slow is due to the mechanical movement.
