SESK: Stuff Everyone Should Know · sesk.info/wood-water-based-clear
Compared with oil-based polyurethane, how do water-based clear finishes like Polycrylic usually look?
They usually dry crystal clear.
- They add a warm amber tone
- They turn milky white
- They usually dry crystal clear ✔
Why: Oil-based polyurethane adds some warmth and depth to the wood's color. Water-based topcoats usually dry crystal clear, so pale woods stay pale. Test both on a scrap to pick the look you want.
Huh, didn't know that: Minwax recommends a synthetic brush for water-based polyurethane and a natural bristle brush for oil-based polyurethane.
Which hand is better to paint with? Neither! A paintbrush is better.
