When an announcer says the count is 3 and 1, what does the 3 mean?

Three balls. The count always gives balls first, then strikes.

  1. Three strikes
  2. Three outs
  3. Three balls ✔

Why: The count lists balls first, then strikes. So 3 and 1 means three balls and one strike, a great spot for the batter. A full count is 3 and 2.

Huh, didn't know that: The rulebook lists counts the same way, for example 2 balls, 1 strike, when it decides which pitcher gets charged for a walk.

The dad joke
Why did the count go to math class? It wanted to be full.
