SESK: Stuff Everyone Should Know · sesk.info/base-no-hitter
What is a no-hitter in baseball?
The other team gets no hits, but runners can still reach base.
- No batter reaches base
- No hits by the other team ✔
- No runs by the other team
Why: In a no-hitter, the other team gets no hits. Batters can still reach base on a walk, a hit by pitch, an error or a dropped third strike.
Huh, didn't know that: John Means's 2021 no-hitter had one baserunner, who reached on a dropped third strike.
Why did the pitcher celebrate quietly? He did not want to jinx the no-hitter.
