SESK: Stuff Everyone Should Know · sesk.info/base-tag-out
Normally, when can a fielder holding the ball tag a runner out?
When the runner is off the base while the ball is alive.
- Any time, even on a base they own
- Only at home plate
- When off a base they are entitled to ✔
Why: With the ball alive, a runner is normally out when tagged while not touching a base they are entitled to. The fielder must control the ball through the tag.
Huh, didn't know that: If the fielder drops the ball immediately after touching the runner, before proving control, the tag does not count.
Why did the runner love tag? He was it-ching to steal.
