Why does the Coast Guard warn against anchoring a small boat from the stern?

It could swamp the boat. Anchor from the bow.

  1. It is illegal in every state
  2. It could swamp the boat ✔
  3. It scratches the propeller

Why: The stern is usually low and square, so waves and current can pour over it when the boat is held from behind. A single anchor should go out from the bow.

Huh, didn't know that: At anchor, a boat may swing a full 360 degrees around the anchor as wind or current shifts, so check your swing room.

The dad joke
Why do anchors never get lost? They always hold their ground.
