SESK: Stuff Everyone Should Know · sesk.info/boat-sea-anchor-bucket
If your engine dies in rough water, what can you trail from the bow to keep it pointed into the waves?
A sea anchor, and in a pinch a bucket works.
- A spare life jacket
- The swim ladder
- A sea anchor, or even a bucket ✔
Why: A sea anchor drags in the water and holds the bow toward the waves, the most stable direction. The Coast Guard says a bucket can work as a sea anchor in an emergency.
Huh, didn't know that: In severe weather the Coast Guard also says to keep the bilges free of water.
Why did the bucket go to the doctor? It was looking a little pail.
