SESK: Stuff Everyone Should Know · sesk.info/boat-waves-45-degrees
In severe weather, at what angle does the Coast Guard advise heading your boat into the waves?
About 45 degrees, bow first.
- Straight on, at 0 degrees
- About 45 degrees ✔
- Sideways, at 90 degrees
Why: Waves hitting the side can roll a small boat, so keep the bow toward them at about a 45-degree angle. Slow down, but keep enough power to maintain headway and steering.
Huh, didn't know that: The Coast Guard also says to turn on your running lights in severe weather so others can see you.
Why did the wave break up with the shore? It kept pulling away.
