The Coast Guard's general rule says to let out how much anchor line compared to the water depth?

Five to seven times the depth, plus the height of your bow.

  1. Five to seven times the depth ✔
  2. Exactly equal to the depth
  3. Twenty times the depth

Why: Extra line lets the anchor pull along the bottom so it digs in. Add the distance from the water up to your bow cleat. In 8 feet of water with a 2-foot bow, that is 10 feet times 5 to 7.

Huh, didn't know that: NASBLA defines scope as the ratio of anchor line (rode) to total depth, including tide changes and freeboard.

The dad joke
What kind of music do anchors like? Heavy metal.
