SESK: Stuff Everyone Should Know · sesk.info/boat-barometer-falling
If the barometer on your boat is falling, what does the Coast Guard say it indicates?
Rain is approaching.
- Fair weather is on the way
- The wind is about to stop
- Rain is approaching ✔
Why: A falling barometer means air pressure is dropping, which usually comes before rain and unsettled weather. The Coast Guard says to check an onboard barometer every two to three hours.
Huh, didn't know that: A rising barometer means fair weather, but the Coast Guard notes it can also mean the wind is picking up.
Why was the barometer so stressed? It was under a lot of pressure.
