SESK: Stuff Everyone Should Know · sesk.info/cdl-restriction-e-automatic
If you take the CDL skills test in a truck with an automatic transmission, what goes on your license?
An E restriction: no manual transmission CMVs.
- An E restriction: no manual transmissions ✔
- Nothing, the test covers both types
- A K restriction: in-state driving only
Why: Testing in an automatic proves nothing about shifting gears, so the state restricts you from driving a CMV with a manual transmission. The code is E.
Huh, didn't know that: Any transmission that is not a true manual counts as automatic for this rule.
Why did the gearshift go to school? To move up a grade.
