What do we show loyalty to when we say the Pledge of Allegiance?

The United States and its flag.

Why: The Pledge shows loyalty to the United States and the flag. USCIS accepts either one. It is not a pledge to any person or office.

Huh, didn't know that: The original Pledge of Allegiance was written by Francis Bellamy in 1892.
