What can a commercial pilot do that a private pilot generally cannot?
Be paid to fly: act as pilot in command carrying people or cargo for pay.
- Be pilot in command carrying persons or property for pay ✔
- Fly passengers in clouds without an instrument rating
- Fly any aircraft without a type rating
Why: Section 61.133 lets a commercial pilot fly for compensation or hire, as long as the pilot is also qualified under the other rules that apply to that kind of flight. A private pilot has only narrow exceptions.
Huh, didn't know that: Having the certificate does not make a flight legal. Operating rules such as Part 135 can add more requirements.
Why did the new commercial pilot love payday? It was the first time his career really took off.
