SESK: Stuff Everyone Should Know · sesk.info/drone-advection-fog-needs-wind
What makes advection fog different from radiation fog?
Advection fog needs wind to carry warm, moist air over a cold surface.
- It only forms in desert valleys
- It needs wind to form ✔
- It always burns off by mid-morning
Why: Advection fog forms when wind moves warm, moist air over cooler ground or water. It is common along coasts and can stick around for days.
Huh, didn't know that: If the wind tops about 15 knots, advection fog usually lifts into low stratus clouds.
Why did the fog travel? It was advection-ate about moving around.
