SESK: Stuff Everyone Should Know · sesk.info/drone-compensation-not-the-test
According to the FAA, what decides whether a drone flight counts as recreational?
The purpose, fun and personal enjoyment, not whether you got paid.
- Whether you were paid for it
- Whether it was for fun and personal enjoyment ✔
- Whether the drone weighs under 250 grams
Why: Recreational means flying for fun and personal enjoyment. The FAA says pay, or the lack of it, does not decide it. Even unpaid volunteer work for a non-profit can be non-recreational.
Huh, didn't know that: The FAA says almost all non-recreational drone flying is regulated by Part 107.
My drone offered to work for free. I said that is very generous, but you still need a certificate.
