Before hitting a provisional ball, what must a golfer do?

Announce it, using the word 'provisional' or making it just as clear.

Start playing free

  1. Say 'I'll hit another one'
  2. Tee it up a club-length forward
  3. Announce it is a provisional ball ✔

Why: Rule 18.3b says saying you are 'playing another ball' is not enough. You must say 'provisional' or clearly show it, or the new ball becomes your ball in play with a penalty.

Huh, didn't know that: If nobody is nearby to hear, you may play the provisional and tell someone when you can.

The dad joke
What did the golfer say before his second shot? Provisionally, I'm still having fun.
