SESK: Stuff Everyone Should Know · sesk.info/hame-laminated-cores
Why are the cores of inductors and transformers sometimes built from thin layers?
Reduce eddy current loss in the core.
- To simplify assembly
- To reduce power loss from eddy currents ✔
- To save cost on magnetic material
Why: Eddy currents swirl through a solid core and waste power as heat. Thin insulated layers break up those loops, so the core stays cooler and more efficient.
Huh, didn't know that: Powdered iron has higher temperature stability of its magnetic traits than ferrite (E6D08).
Why did a mathematician buy a bunch of coils and transformers before writing his paper? Proof by induction.
