Why does the Forest Service say to carry a compass even if you have a GPS device?
GPS can lose its signal or its battery can die. A compass and map still work.
- GPS is not allowed on trails
- GPS can lose signal or run out of battery ✔
- A compass is more accurate than GPS
Why: Electronics are great tools, but they fail. The Forest Service says GPS units sometimes get no signal or the battery fails, so carry a compass you know how to use and a paper map.
