SESK: Stuff Everyone Should Know · sesk.info/horse-colic-definition
In horses, what does the word colic actually mean?
Colic means belly pain, not one single disease.
- A virus that attacks the lungs
- A hoof infection from wet footing
- Abdominal pain from many possible causes ✔
Why: Colic is a broad term for conditions that cause abdominal pain in horses. The cause can be mild, such as gas, or life threatening, such as a twisted gut, so every case needs attention.
Huh, didn't know that: Horses cannot vomit, so a vet may pass a tube through the nose into the stomach to release gas or fluid.
What did the mare tell her filly after dinner? Don't forget to clear the stable!
