SESK: Stuff Everyone Should Know · sesk.info/horse-taking-pulse-fingers
When taking a horse's pulse at the jaw, why should you avoid using your thumb?
Your thumb has its own pulse, so use two fingers.
- The horse may bite it
- You may feel your own pulse instead ✔
- Thumbs are too wide to fit
Why: Press your first and second fingers gently against the jawbone. Your thumb has a pulse of its own, and you could mistake it for the horse's heartbeat.
Huh, didn't know that: A pulse can be taken anywhere you can hear or feel the heartbeat, not only at the jaw.
What's a horse's favorite TV show? Neighbors.
