SESK: Stuff Everyone Should Know · sesk.info/hunt-cwd-testing
In areas with chronic wasting disease, what does the CDC recommend before eating your deer or elk?
Strongly consider having it tested, and don't eat it if it tests positive.
- Cook it extra well and eat it
- Have it tested before eating ✔
- Freeze it for a year first
Why: CWD is a prion disease of deer, elk and moose. The CDC says it has not been shown to infect people, but advises testing in affected areas and not eating meat that tests positive.
Huh, didn't know that: The CDC also says not to shoot, handle or eat animals that look sick or act strangely.
Why did the elk go to the doctor? It wanted a second moose-pinion.
