SESK: Stuff Everyone Should Know · sesk.info/hunt-distress-signal-three
What's the widely recognized distress signal if you're lost in the woods?
Three of anything, evenly spaced: whistle blasts, fires or shots.
- Two long whistle blasts
- One big fire
- Three evenly spaced signals ✔
Why: Three of anything evenly spaced means 'I need help.' A whistle carries farther than your voice and takes less energy than shouting.
Huh, didn't know that: A plastic whistle and a signal mirror are both on hunter education's must-have survival kit list.
Why don't whistles ever win arguments? They always blow it.
