A deer runs off after a firearm shot. About how long should you wait before following it?

At least 30 minutes, often up to an hour.

  1. Follow it right away
  2. At least 30 minutes ✔
  3. About 5 minutes

Why: Note the time and the spot, then wait. Pushing a hit animal too soon can make it get up and run farther, which makes recovery harder.

Huh, didn't know that: Massachusetts hunter education suggests about 1 hour for archery hits, and longer if you are unsure of the shot.

The dad joke
Why do hunters wait before trailing? Patience is part of the hunt.
